Splitwise Review: The Must-Have App for Group Travel

Please note that this post contains affiliate links to find out more information, read my disclosure policy for more information.

Money has a funny way of turning even the best trips or living situations into something slightly uncomfortable.

Especially when traveling with friends, it’s easy to forget who paid which tab at the restaurant, or who paid for the drinks, or who bought the Uber to the airport. The line gets blurry, and that could not be a good thing when traveling with friends. It also makes it difficult for you to keep tabs on how much you really spent on your travels.

No one likes doing the mental math or wondering who owes what and who will pay for the group dinner up front (no one likes doing that because they’re scared that they’re not going to get their money back from their friends.)

This is why I started using Splitwise — and why I still use it today. In this review, I’ll walk through what Splitwise is, how it works, and why it’s one of the most practical tools I recommend for group travel and shared expenses.

This is not a sponsored post! Just writing about what has saved my friends and I from the headache of keeping receipts and numbers with endless calculator screenshots in the group chat for our travels!

What Is Splitwise?

Splitwise is an expense-sharing app designed to make splitting money with other people simple and transparent. Instead of keeping notes in your phone or relying on spreadsheets, Splitwise tracks shared expenses in one place and clearly shows who owes whom and how much.

The app is available on iOS, Android, and web, making it easy for everyone in a group to stay on the same page. It’s especially popular among travelers, roommates, couples, and friend groups who regularly split costs and want to avoid awkward money conversations.

Why I Started Using Splitwise

I started using Splitwise after one of my friends and freshman year roommate recommended me this app for our first travel together to San Diego in my freshman year of university when I was 18. So when our group expenses piled up for all of our meals, our activities, and everything down to our boba was added into Splitwise – it was easy to just pay everyone back in one sitting after the end of the travel or during.

I’ve heard plenty of horror stories from friends going abroad and owing each other hundreds of dollars that they never got back. Because everyone kept saying, “We’ll figure it out later,” but by the end of the trip, no one could remember who paid for what. So ever since that first San Diego trip, I’ve never stopped using Splitwise when traveling with all my friends.

You would often hear “just add it to Splitwise” whenever anyone passes up their card for the bill. And it’ll always be paid.

Splitwise completely changed that experience. Instead of stress at the end of the trip, we added expenses as we went. Everyone could see the balance in real time, and there was no need for uncomfortable reminders or chasing people for money afterward. It took the emotional weight out of money and let us focus on actually enjoying the trip.

Key Features of Splitwise

Expense Splitting

Splitwise allows you to split expenses equally or unevenly, which is helpful when someone orders more food, stays an extra night, or covers a larger share of costs. You can also split by exact amounts or percentages. You can also simplify the debt so the debt equalizes the itself to avoid the maximum amount of transactions needed between people, which I could not stress the convenience of this.

Groups & Trips

One of the best features is the ability to create groups for specific trips, households, or events. Each group keeps expenses organized so you’re not mixing rent payments with travel costs or weekend outings.

I have new groups for each city or country I’ve visited with my friends and you can also see how much money you spent for the entire trip!

Multi-Currency Support

For international travel, Splitwise supports multiple currencies, automatically converting expenses so everyone understands what they owe — a huge plus when traveling abroad.

Settle Up Function

The “Settle Up” feature clearly shows who should pay whom, reducing confusion and unnecessary transactions. Instead of everyone paying everyone, Splitwise minimizes the number of payments needed.

Recurring Expenses

For roommates or couples, recurring expenses like rent, utilities, or subscriptions can be added and tracked consistently without starting from scratch each month. Aside from traveling, a lot of my friends also split groceries and utilities via Splitwise!

Using Splitwise for Travel

Splitwise truly shines when used for group travel. Whether you’re splitting hotels, flights, meals, tours, or transportation, having everything logged in one place makes the trip smoother from start to finish.

During trips, I add expenses as they happen instead of waiting until the end. This keeps balances accurate and prevents misunderstandings later. It’s also helpful when traveling internationally since currency conversions are handled automatically.

Compared to spreadsheets or note apps, Splitwise feels effortless. There’s no math involved, no guessing, and no awkward group texts asking people to Venmo you days after the trip ends.

Free vs Paid: Is Splitwise Pro Worth It?

Splitwise offers a free version that works perfectly for most people. It includes unlimited groups, basic expense tracking, and the ability to settle balances.

Splitwise Pro adds extra features like spending charts, expense search, and an ad-free experience. If you frequently manage complex expenses or like visual insights into your spending habits, Pro may be worth it. Otherwise, the free version is more than enough for casual users and travelers.

I currently use the free version, and it has been more than enough for everything I need!

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Easy to use and intuitive interface
  • Reduces money-related stress and conflict
  • Excellent for group travel and roommates
  • Supports multiple currencies

Cons

  • Everyone needs the app for the best experience
  • Settling payments still requires external apps like Venmo or PayPal

Who I Recommend Splitwise For

Splitwise is ideal for:

  • Group travelers
  • Roommates sharing rent and utilities
  • Couples managing shared expenses
  • Friends who value transparency and simplicity

If you regularly split costs with other people, this app can save time, energy, and relationships.

Final Verdict: Is Splitwise Worth It?

In my experience, Splitwise is absolutely worth using. It removes the awkwardness around money, keeps expenses organized, and makes group experiences feel lighter and more enjoyable. Whether you’re planning your next trip or managing everyday shared costs, Splitwise is one of those tools that quietly makes life easier.

If you’ve ever felt stressed about splitting expenses, this is the app you ABSOLUTELY need to download!
